Junkers T23 with additional lower Wing

Historical Background:

A major problem of the T19/J21/J22 designs were the high wing loads in several flight phases. These were critizised by flight schools, who tested the Junkers T19, as well as by the Soviet Army, which tested the Junkers J21. Therefore Junkers decided to built a test plane series, based on the T19, to gather some expierence with the high level wing construction. This test series was designated as Junkers T23 in 1923.

In addition to the high level wing, a lower wing was added and the aircraft was used as a biplane aircraft. To get comparable data, the lower wing of the T23 could be removed and the aircraft could also be used as highlever monoplane. The designator T23D was used for the biplane version, while the designator T23E or U23 was used for the monoplane version. A total of four aircraft were built during 1923 and all were used in different configurations.

As result of the several test flights, the advantages of the monoplane aicraft design was proofed. The four test aircraft were later sold to flight schools.
